One Step At A Time 25

Dear Diary,

Weeks passed by wana eb nafs el 7ala, in and out of the hospital every week... I kept over hearing the Doctor telling my mom I wasn't getting any better, but they still had to encourage me, and give me hope... though I know for sure I know have a 50/50 chance in living. Shaikha spent the day at my house, we had a blast

Shaikha: *Burp*

Farah: Hahahaha, weja3!

Shaikha: chub wela chna tawa you burped a bigger one

Me: *BURRRRP*

Shaikha: 3afyaaaaa taryou3aaaaa! Baaaal 3laaaaaich

The bell suddenly rang, and it was Sager... waiting for his sister to finish eating dinner

Me: ge3daaaaayy, latrou7een, taw el nas! ye3ni lazem ukhouch elmaleeq eekhareb 3laina

Shaikha: Magdar, lazem arou7... beezifny la2ana ga3d ana6ra bl 7ar

Mama: khaleeh eedish, 3adi... wetha ma retha, tell farah to go outside to talk to him

Shaikha: Khalty ra7 ee3a9eb

Mama: Nonsense, he's part of the family now.

Shaikha: Enshallah arou7 anady

So me and Shaikha, walked outside. I stayed next to the gate giving her and Sager some privacy. I can see, the anger in his eyes. He was probably more embarrassed than angry. haha, a7san. ana a3alma law ma fashalta. Both Shaikha and Sager walked in the house, Sager without even smiling or saying hi to me

Sager: Salam khalty shlounch?

Mama: Bkhair 7abeebi, and you?

Sager: el7amdellah tamam

Me: Haaa Sager laish kent m3a9eb a few minutes ago, shda3wa mataby tdesh lai hal daraja *eyebrows raised*

Sager: Laa mu 3an

And Shaikha interrupted him: eeeeh khalty law tshoufeena! Fe9al 3lay, 7saita bughait yerga3ny, ga3d egoul fashla deshay el sayara

Sager through gritted teeth: eklay tben entay weyaha la arga3 wyouhkum bl 6oufa

Me: Ha Sager ma sema3tek? Haw shfeek

Shaikha winked back at me which meant, 7ailna 3laih. Wayha 9ar a7mar, and mom started laughing

Mama: Bss a7ratjaw el walad! hahahaha, yallah ya jema3a ana badesh ghurfuty, have fun doing whatever you wanna do together.

Me and shaikha: bahahahahaahahhaha " La mu 3an" MASSKEEEN

Sager: Ana a3almch

And before he could catch Shaikha, she ran so fast, and was out of sight. It was only us

Sager: Ahaa, so I guess this is only me and you haaa

And he gave me his smile... akhhh my heart just melted

Me: haha wakher 3any

Sager: Maku

Me: Wallah a6gk

Sager: Jarbay

Me: A9lan agdar asheelk yal 3a9aya, awal mara ashouf 9bay la 3anda 3athalat wela 3anda shay

Me: Saaagggerrr laaaaaa *giggle*

I took the bottle of water and poured it on top of him

Sager: Aaaaaaa7777, BAAAARED!

Me: Muahahahahaha, 3shan matjeesny

Sager: Shloun ba6la3 al7een?

Me: Take of your shirt eb the room over there, and I'll give you one of dad's old shirts

Sager: Enzain

He took a long time changing so I decided to check up on him, I knocked once, no one answered....

Me: Sager???

No answer whatsoever

Me: Saaaager??

I went in, afraid he might have got an asthma attack or something, but I found him looking at the pictures me mom had put up on the wall... He was staring at them, un aware that he was still topless. Oh my god, his body, his perfect biceps, he's so Aaaaahh. I dropped a souvenir on the floor blghala6, 6ela3 kent ga3d atsanad 3lay wana mu mstaw3eba. Umbay fashlaaaaa

Me: Umm, s-s-sorry ma kan...

And I got lost in his eyes, he came closer and closer by the second, we were dangerously close to each other, I can feel his breathe on my neck.

Sager whispering: its kind of rude to stare haha

I snapped back to reality

Me: Wai3 mn zeenk ag3ad akhzk

And just as I was gonna push him away, I just couldn't, My hand stayed there, more like froze there, on his chest. He put his hands in mine, and we just stood there. Gazing into each others eyes, speaking though our mouths weren't moving, we knew our eyes could say it all... I almost heard Sager whisper a7bch

Me: What?

Sager: e7mm... wela shay

and he quickly put his shirt back on, completely ignoring the fact of what just happened between us

One Step At A Time 24

Dear Diary,

My mom spent the next few weeks with her hubba Ahmed, in Maldives having the time of their lives. Me and the girls decided not to call them, to avoid any unnecessary worrying. And let them enjoy their time.

I finished eating and went to wash my hand, Sager was using the sink next to me

Shaikha: SAAAGER

Sager: haaa... shnu? Eeeeh! Yeebay thalj, khanshouf reelha shfeeha

He looked at my leg, and started moving it a bit, and asking me if it hurts with every time he moves it. He pressured it in some places. He pushed hard on my leg. I quickly put my hand in attempt in pushing his away. But that kind of didn't help. My hand stayed on top of his, holding each other by our finger tips.

Shaikha: Yebtaaa!

We both flinched, and pulled our hands away

Sager: Sa3a, yal barda sa3a!

Shaikha: Shtaby kan lazem a93ad foug

Farah: how do you know all this? Like what to do in situations like this?

Sager: I spent the last 3 years taking care of my sister. I did all the research, and took all the classes that I needed to, to make sure nothing happens to my sister wana ma3aref shasawy

Farah: thats so sweet of you

I never thought Sager could be this caring. He surprises me by the day.

Sager: Thankyou

Shaikha came and gave him the stuff. He carefully wrapped my leg up and helped me get up. I sat down on the couch, still in pain, but a lot less than before.

Sager: You'll be fine. Don't worry, bss shway matfoukha... It'll be back by normal in 2 days, just don't put weight on it.

Me: Sager

Sager: Hala

Me: Mashkour

Sager: El3afu Farah.

And he got up, and left. I just stood there staring at what used to be where he was sitting down.

One Step At A Time 23

Dear Diary,

The chemotherapy sessions kept coming, and my hair kept falling... I spent my days in the hospital with Shaikha making sure I don't bump into her brother Sager. Days, weeks, and almost a month passed by, and by that time. My hair all disappeared, it was just me and my bald head. I covered my head with a turban whenever I went out. It was too embarrassing to be seen like this. I looked too ugly, I had to ersem 7wajby al7een, so much for the days where they were thick and marsoumeen. Haha. Chick boom I woke up with my mom announcing that today was her Melcha/3ers... Was it that fast?!

Mama: Yallah ge3day mn el noum yal 7lwa, 3ersy elyoum!

Life plans things in such unexpected ways, in such surprising ways. It's a jumble of irony. Rather than one of my sisters getting married, it's my mom. But that's what makes life beautiful, everything surprises you, it might be something good, it might be something bad, but at the end they both teach you something valuable in life. To cherish every second you go through.

Me: *Yawn* Yallah mama, kany al7een agoum just let me estaw3eb wats happening

Mama: Yallahhhhhh, its 1:00 ou we have to go to the Salon, we have a lot of things to do, hair, makeup etc.

Mom paused for a second and realized that she said the word "hair" and well... I sort of don't have hair.

Mama: Im so sorry 7beebti wallah ma kan qa9dy

Me: Mom shfeech? Umbay tara wallah 3adi, why are you guys making a big deal about me not having hair, just imagine that I shaved it all off on my willing.

Mama: 3shan agtlch

And she started tickling me till I woke up and ran all the way to the bathroom

We spent our day getting ready in the Salon, I of course finished the first seeing that there was no hair to be done, I sat there waiting for them, watching the women doing their hair into all kind of up do's. I envied them, but then started estaghfering raby, and e7meding him for all the ne3ams I have... 4 hours passed and FINALLY it was time for the 3ers. Me and my sisters helped mom with wearing her wedding gown, and put on the final touches. She looked, simply. Breathe taking. We had to leave mom for a while so we could salem 3ala the guests, and who did I see between the crowd of women dancing like gypsies? SHAIKHA! I couldn't believe my eyes, I went to her and gave her a hug mn wara

Shaikha: Farah? What are you doing here?!

Me: Its my mom's wedding! What are you doing here?!

Shaikha: Its my uncle's wedding! Omg the coincidence! Kuwait 7adha 9gheera!

Me: Uffff 7aadhaaaa!

Me and Shaikha, spent the next hour dancing and laughing... Up until they announced it was time for my mom to walk in, She slowly walked her way down the aisle, with over 200 pairs of eyes staring at her, analyzing her every move. She looked absolutely flawless, with her white skin and her dark brown hair, all up in a up do, showing her perfect collar bones. My eyes met her's and she was tearing up, and a tear escaped her eye. For once, I actually saw my mom crying... tears of joy. She made me start crying too, it was just too touching. A while later it was time for the men to walk in, The me3res aka Ahmed came in all handsome looking with his bisht, but no one caught my eye except Sager, he came in looking ever so manly, eyes seeda wela eltefat. I could feel the girls looking at him, and some of them started "accidentally" dropping there 3abayas, showing some cleavage, the cheapness...

Mom had trouble with her dress, so I went up and helped her adjust it, Sager looked at me, eyes bulging. He then realized how hard he was staring at looked down... I really had to go to the loo so I made my way outside the ballroom and all the way to the bathroom. On my way, a guy was screaming a few meters away saying

...: ANA AWAL OU AKHER WA7ED YAKHTHECH BL7ALAL!! WAINECH YA 7MARA WAINECH?!?!

I suddenly realized who that person was, it was my father! I ran my way towards him, spreading my arms trying to keep him from going in the ball room, he wasn't going to ruin my mom's day. He twisted my arm, and I cried in pain.

Sager: HEDHA!!! GELTLEK HEDHA!

Sager grabbed him from his shirt and threw him on the wall, calling the security with the top of his lungs, his eyes raging from anger, his face as red as blood. The security took him with baba yelling and screaming barely on his feet, as always... he was drunk

Sager: MNU HATHA!!!!

Me: Sager hady, shfeek m3a9eb

I held his shoulder trying to calm him down, he suddenly realized how mad he was and slowly calmed down

Sager: Im sorry, la ou ts2leeny ba3ad? Sheftay shloun maskech?! Mnu hatha mn9ejy farah, ou shnu kan yaby mnech?

Me: th-th-thats my father, or at least thats what written on my birth certificate, bss ana ma3teref eb wejouda

Sager: Farah 3aib shhal kalam hatha ubouch

Me: You don't know anything about him. Ma atsharaf eni asameeh ubouy

Sager: Khala9 khala9, khan9ek el salfa... ta3alay entay shyaybech mny?

Me: Sheft the bride?

Sager: Eeeh

Me: Hathy umy

Sager: 7elfay?! Shakelha 9gheera, matshabhech! Ehya 7elwa, entay laish 6al3a chthy 3ouya hahahah

Me: Ayal 7mar ana 3ouya, ma sheft nafsek ma3a wayhek m7asesny enta elli kelesh

Sager: A9lan ana jameeeeeel, mazyoouuuun... look

And he started walking the cat walk walk, smiling and waving at the imaginary crowd

Me: weja3, ya sekhfek

Sager: ye3ni you can do it any better mathalan?

Me: Hell yes!

I started imitating his walk, I accidentally stepped on my 3abaya and it fell down, Sager quickly looked away. As I leaned down and took my 3abaya and put it on

Sager: *whispering* jameela

Me: Shnu gelt?

Sager: ga3d agoul, sheefa weye3yath bella

Me: Malat ella malat

I walked my way back to the ballroom but Sager held my hand

Sager: Dgeega ne6ray

Me: shtaby?

Sager: Lai hal daraja eehimich rayee? *raising his eyebrows in a teasing way*

Me: Sheft lman there's no man on earth ella enta?

Sager: yeah?

Me: Even then, rayek mara7 eehimny

Sager: Enzain, tara you look beautiful.

I blushed and walked my way to the ballroom completely ignoring the fact that he just complimented me. I found my mom and Ahmed dancing to the song Locked out of Heaven- Bruno Mars, seeing that everyone went home by now, we all joined in, dancing to the playlist I had on my iPod " Jam Time"

One Step At A Time 22

Dear Diary,

I kept taking monthly doses of chemotherapy. Every session was worse than the other. I actually had company with me today, a young girl named Shaikha, she was 13 years old, she was a sweet person. She was bald with no hair whatsoever, not on her face, wela on her head. But surprisingly, that didn't bother her.

Shaikha: Men meta wentay eb hal 7ala?

Me: A few months

Shaikha: embayen your a newbie

Me: Shadarach?

Shaikha: Cause unlike me, your hair is still here.

Me: Laish entay shkether 9arlech

Shaikha: 2 years in counting, it just never seems to fade away

Me: Enzain lets talk about something else, something fun!

Shaikha: Hahaha okay!

And we kept talking for the next 2 hours till the session was over. And it was time for us to leave. I was waiting for the driver to come pick me up, what took him so long? Shaikha called her brother and told him to come a little late seeing that she wouldn't leave me here all alone. 15 min later and the driver still didn't arrive.

Shaikha: tabeen age6ech el bait?

Me: Laaa laaa, ka al7een elsayeg beyee

Shaikha: tg9een 3ala mnu, you've been saying that for the past 30 min, yallah mu bkaifch get your stuff ana badeg gala ukhouy wagoula eyeee

I took my stuff and waited till ekhouha yah and got in the car

Shaikha: khan a3arfech 3ala ukhouy

And her brother turned around and it was HIM!! God have mercy! Lai meta, me and him started laughing our asses off, this was too ironic

Shaikha: haw shfeekum? Did I miss something?

Me: No, you didn't miss anything

Shaikha: You know my brother?

...: Lel2asaf eeh a3arfha

Shaikha: Laish tgoul lel asaf ya 7mar

Me: Mind me, but I have never met a more annoying brother like yours

...: eee7a9elech 3ad

Shaikha: Sager, Farah! Shfeekum?

Me: Hahahaha nothing

Sager: Kelesh nothing ha??

Shaikha: Next time we have chemo betgouleenly elsalfa

Sager's face turned pale. He just realized that I was in a hospital that treated cancer.

Sager: Farah? You have cancer?

Shaikha: Laaa yal 9aida 3yal laish kanat weyay.

Me: Yes

Sager's POV

I remembered the day when I bumped into her in the hospital, and when she was forced to sleep in a hospital in Dubai, and how much she got affected when Wahab died. It all made sense, why was I so stupid, all the signs were right in front of me, and I never realized it, we both knew we had a lot we wanted to say, bss we couldn't la2ana shaikha was here. The second me and Farah are alone, Im gonna confront her. Why didn't she tell me?

Back to Farah's POV

I remembered when I bumped into him in the hospital, and how much he understood me when it came to Wahab. I can't believe ma galy ena his sister had cancer, he had a lot of explaining to do, But why didn't he tell me?

I went back home and started combing my hair, it was so kesha... Suddenly strands of my hair started falling on the ground. It kept getting more khafeef everyday. I was worried that by the end of this month, and by the time mom's wedding occurs, I would be well, hairless. I took the hair and throwed it in the garbage, hiding it with a bunch of tissues on top of it, I didn't want anyone to know that I was loosing my hair. The attention I had was over bearing.

One Step At A Time 21

Dear Diary,

I went back to Kuwait, with my family and friends greeting me in the airport. Shahad and Noura ran into me giving me the most bone crushing hug.

Shahad: We missed you so much!!

Noura: Eeeeh, umbay 6afech wayed wayed?

Shahad: OOOSSH SEKTAAAY!!

Me: Haw shelsalfa?

Shahad: Malat 3laich, 7aljech hatha mat3arfeen tsdeena! YUMAA BENTECH GALAT ENA FEEH SHAY

Mom gave Noura a hit on a head, and turned to me and smiled

Noura: Ouch.

Shahad: Chub testahlain

Mama: Remember lam an gelteely that Im gonna find my prince charming eb hal 3ers specifically? Well I did, I was once a married man, then allah yer7amha murta matat while giving birth, and so did the child. He's been a widow ever since. Akbar mny in a year and he comes from a good family. I got everyone's approval on this, Im just waiting for yours 3shan namlech sometime in the next month. We wanna do it fast just in case your dad decides to make a riot.

Me: Mom are you kidding? Im more than just okay with this! GO FOR IT!!! Im so happy for you!

I was more than happy for my mom, finally I can see my mom smile, and actually mean it. For once in years, she would have someone to sleep next to, without feeling lonely every now and then
